In my opinion the subject of an email is more important than the person who wrote it. Most of the time it's not very relevant (e.g. on this list), or you can deduce it from the subject anyway. So I would put the subject to the left, and the sender on the right, just before the date.
I do like the idea of a fav mark, and the two line view of the threads. It makes me wonder how useful that is for high traffic threads though.
