9.0.4 is just fine as long as you fix the "Wrapper System File" error 
that is reported to cause your HD to go south. (I've seen it happen) You 
can do this by downloading Disk First Aid 8.6.1 and running it, and 
replacing the DFA you now have in your utilities folder with that version.

9.1 seems to be the best place to stop for best compatibility with newer 
and older stuff on G3s UNLESS you are trying to run X as well.....then 
I'd say yes, you need 9.2.x.  But if you are ONLY running 9, 9.1 is the 
best place to stop.

If your machine is slightly pushing it by running 9 to begin with (older 
PPC than G3 with no upgrade card) I would stick with 9.0.4 which is a bit 
less demanding than 9.1.

I would not even attempt to run X (supposing I liked it - but by now you 
all know I don't and have been piling up the X CDs in the drawer) on 
something less than a G4 with 512 RAM.
