Can you verify their instuctions. You mention that AT&T tells you to put your username as an encrypted string. However, the UserName field in Emailer has no bearing on anything that is going to happen with the mail server (or at least shouldn't). Maybe they meant the username sent to the mail server needs to be encrypted. That is a different thing.
