I'm a long time user of WP, and prefer it over Word for several reasons.
However, as I needed to share files with Word users more and more, and
especially if exact formatting (line breaks, page breaks, graphics) was
critical, I found that there is just no substitute for owning a copy of
Word.
It's expensive, slow, and a royal pain in the butt frequently (like with
the Preferences file and/or Normal Template getting corrupted), but a
necessary evil in my view.
If all you need is to see the content (text) in a Word document, you may
be able to do without it.
