I had tried dragging and dropping but was unsuccessful - after advice 
from various sources  that, one way or another, that is the way to go, I 
figured out how to drag and drop the entries from the various sources 
including the spreadsheet (which could be highlighted and dragged on mass 
from Appleworks directly in). 

Oddly enough, the list that was in the body of an email was trickiest 
because there were  occasional spaces between entries and at first, 
despite the whole list being highlighted and appearing to drag, only the 
entries up to the first space would end up in the address field of the 
group. 

So, thanks for the advice - a simple but useful thing learned!
