The plan is to dialup AOL to retrieve AOL mail, and then stay connected
to use TCP/IP over the AOL connection to reach her POP e-mail server(s).

"Connection refused" each time I tried. Are you certain this is the
correct URL?

Perhaps, but probably not efficiently. I'd like to create a custom modem
init string, but the 'custom' option is greyed out. I'm not sure what
I'd need to enable it.

I tried to encourage her not to use AOL when she got online again, but
since she had an AOL account before, and is decidedly non-technical, we
went with AOL her comfort level (the last cheap ISP I tried to set her up
with went under). Emailer is actually the first step to getting her off
AOL. Once DSL is available in her neighbourhood, it should be
sufficiently speedy and cheap enough that there's no reason to keep AOL.

It does - but I'd still like to make sure that the URL for the AOL CCLs
is correct.

Thanks for your help.
