Signature lines can be a problem if: - they may offend or annoy someone (mostly a concern when you're unsure of who gets the messages, which is the case on mailing lists) - they are unreasonably big or irrelevant given the actual content (some users care about bandwith usage, or pay for it, or read messages on tiny devices with limited screen resolution and thus care about wasting all that with irrelevant data) - they cause the whole message to be sent in 2 flavors just because of some useless formatting (the normal text and an html alternative, which more than doubles the messages weight), this occurs in some stupid mail programs from the dark side (M$ decided HTML mail was good for us, for very bad reasons, with very stupid settings, causing the worse bandwith waste and annoying factor ever, mostly to people NOT using their programs, which can be considered an amazing accomplishment) - they contain sensible information (in particular, there's usually no reason to repeat one's email address in the sig, since all mailers have a "reply" command that will use the reply address given by the Emailer account used to send the message) >Secondly I notice most Emailers on this List are using the same name and >address in their signature as they do in the Headers. So would they also >be getting spammer messages? Yes, but few repeat their email in the sig. The list archive hides headers, so a web "spider" won't get any addresses from there, except those that appear in the actual content of messages, like in signatures. >I don't know what you mean about using an Alias for Internet work. >Should I call my ISP and find out? Yes, but it may be too easy to bother waiting for tech support. For example, my isp (free.fr) lets anyone (ANYONE) create an unlimited number of free accounts in just a few clicks (login/pass chosen and very easily activated online by the user). Each account provides: - a POP/SMTP/IMAP/WEBMAIL account (20 MB) - a personal web page with FTP access (100 MB) - newsgroup access - free dialup access (except the communication fee billed by the phone company, don't use that from US ;-) So I can create or delete mail addresses whenever I want, with names helping me to keep track of who I gave each address to, etc. And since it's free and unlike others doesn't add any advertisement to either the outgoing messages or web pages, I think it's the best offer anywhere. To bad I'm too lazy to use that as much as I should. I suppose you could use it too, but their account creation pages are probably in French only, so you'd better choose a similar offer in your own country (most ISPs allow you to at least create a limited number of mail accounts; you probably got some instructions to create additional email accounts for you family). ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe send a mail message with a SUBJECT line of "unsubscribe" to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> or <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
