Thanks for the replies on this subject. Just to sum up: The "Mark as Read" script was provided with C.E. from version 2.0.2 I believe. Anyway, I found it in the Support Files --> Example AppleScripts folder together with "Mark as unread" and various others that I had known about originally (but it's been so long!)
The Contextual menu method works fine. Just select the messages and click on them while holding the ctrl button down and select "mark as read". This method fixed 5600 messages in just under 3 minutes. I confess that I was starting to worry when nothing apparently had happened after 2 minutes! (Why did I have so many messages and why would I want to keep them? Well, I did a survey of my customers a few months ago and one day I'll get around to reviewing the results!)
