Recovering Email from Hard Drive

This is somewhat off topic but I've gotten better advice from this list than just about anywhere so here goes.    My hard drive with emailer on it started clicking. I shut down the computer and upon restarting the drive, it didn't mount. This drive primarily contains applications which I could reinstall on another drive. However, I did have my emailer files including the database on this drive which I would like to recover. Any suggestions on how to do this without spending several hundred dollars for a professional data recovery service? Please no lectures about backing up...I've learned my lesson and will now backup religiously.   Andy
