>My tech pal has systems that >have run continuously for over 5 years.
With the exception of blackouts, I have ones that have been on continously for over 15 years. I have machines that get shut off, and ones that stay on. I can tell you after 20+ years of working with computers, the ones that stay on non stop live longer. I don't advocate turning off computers except in specific situations (ie: one of my offices had electrical problems, so any computer not actually in use was to be unplugged from the wall entirely). However, from a home user standpoint, how long do you really plan to keep it? Even with regular power cycling, you are still likely to get 2-5 years out of it before it dies. If you would upgrade within that time frame, then the saved electricity may be more important to you. The computers I care for will have 10-20 year expected service times. Plus, the electricity they use over night is cheaper then the downtime employees have if they turn it on and it dies (99% of failures in electronics occur at power on). The wasted electricity becomes cheap insurance. -chris <http://www.mythtech.net> ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe send a mail message with a SUBJECT line of "unsubscribe" to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> or <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
