Yesterday I mentioned that I was trying a Spam Blocker that my ISP, Cox, was offering. In case anyone else uses Cox, I'd like to describe my experience to date and compare notes, as well as ask some more general questions about features like this.
I had a choice of either letting them filter out the spam before I ever saw it, or letting them send it to me with the word "Spam" inserted in the subject. I chose the latter so that I could see if it was labeling desirable mail as spam. I set up a mail action to place every post in which the subject included "Spam" in my deleted mail folder. (Of course that will mean that this one will be in the deleted mail folder too). That way I can scan them to make sure they are truly spam, then delete for good with a click. So far today, the service has correctly labeled 100 posts as spam, has failed to label 11 posts as spam even though that's what they were, and most important for me it has not labeled any valid posts incorrectly as spam. So if I had chosen the option of letting them filter the spam before sending it to me, I would have received 11 posts to screen rather than 111, and would not have failed to get any valid mail . That sounds like a decent deal to me. I plan to watch it for a week or two before taking the great leap and letting Cox filter spam without sending it to me, but so far I'm delighted. Now a couple of questions. Is this a generic program that is just licensed to Cox as well as other ISPs? If so, does anyone have any experience with it? Or is it something that Cox has developed on its own? Has anyone experienced this program, or others like it, filtering out good email as Spam in error? I'd love to let it filter away on its own while I'm on vacation so that there would be no danger of my mail box filling up and then bouncing valid mail, but then I don't want to let it filter valid mail telling me that I won the lottery. Thanks for any opinions.
