True IIF you have a good UPS =and= the pnone line is protected. We 
usually leave the G4 and iMac running unless: (1) There's lots of thunder 
and lightning in the vicinity, in which case we shut the down, unplug the 
phone line to the DSL modem, and find something else to do; or (B) We're 
gonna be away from the house for an extended period -- like a day or so, 
in which case we do as in (1) above.

So far we've been lucky with 6 or so Macs and never had to deal with 
lightning results, but it only takes one time...
