I'd always seen delays like this in opening CE & when sorting by a different column. It seems best to leave it sorted by date, the others are slower for daily use. My emailer mail db is typically around 300MB.
If you delete most of your emails, you'll find emailer a lot faster, but I'm not actually recommending that! Computer speed & amount of ram allocated to Emailer can make a difference. So can disk fragmentation.
