Two possibilities.

1: Was that hard drive ever mounted on an OS X machine, or did you ever 
use an OS X machine to put files onto that drive (I get .DS_Store files 
on my Windows machine all the time, because OS X puts them there when I 
mount the windows drive on my OS X iMac)

2: They may have come with other applications that are Carbon apps (work 
in OS 9 and OS X).
