Note that damaged components can take weeks, or months to appear. 
(especialy on disk drives, where damaged cmoss chips may work fine for a 
long time, then simply show up in higher frequency failure rates.) I have 
seen both this in repair shops and disk drive assembly shops. The static 
never shows on the surface, but one bad/lazy worker can have 10 times the 
1 year failure rates when tracked. ;-)

Also, modern components are somewhat less susceptible to static than 80's 
components. But I always ground, as static can easily damage RAM, disk 
drives, and other components. Especially in dry climates and winter 
climates.
