Is all of this happening on CABLE or DSL ?

If by any chance there is character based transmission involved such as 
modem or cell phone used as a modem via BLuetooth or USB, then you should 
look at the reliability of that link too, and maybe choose a lower MTU  
(Maximum Transfer Unit)

For most modern networks, MTU is at 1500 bytes per PPP / IP packet.

A smaller MTU could help, if on analog modem.

You triggered this in my mind because of broken files.
