Wow, you can almost hear the crickets chirping on this list... nothing
in almost a month... let's fix that.
Well, before I completely leave Emailer (been feeling the pressure from
my wonderfully accomodating spouse who is about fed up with it...),
maybe someone would have an idea as to how I can stabilize it for a
little bit.
Since around the first of the year, I've had trouble being able to
consistently connect to AOL. I'm running Emailer 2.1 on 10.3.9 on a G4
iMac, and I've been connecting to AOL for years. Because of the quirk
where Emailer hangs if there's an empty mailbox, I have Emailer send an
empty "test message" every time it connects, so there's always at least
one message in the AOL mailbox... and I do this for each of the 5 AOL
accounts my family has. (Using mail filtering, I then delete each test
message as it is received and send a message back in reply, thus
perpetuating the "never-empty-mailbox" scenario.) This most recent
problem appears when Emailer is connecting to AOL... it shows that it
is connecting, but then hangs when checking the password. This happens
on all of our accounts (whether stopping the connection to let it move
on to the next, or trying to connect just to one account or the other).
Sometimes the problem appears to be fixed if I restart Classic, or
restart the iMac itself, but it's not a reliable fix, nor is it really
acceptable to tell me wife and kids to restart the Mac everytime they
want to check their mail.
The iMac is connected to our high-speed (TM) broadband connection from
Insight via an Airport Express router. Our browsers are able to
connect just fine even when Emailer cannot, so I don't think the fault
lies there. But I'm at a loss otherwise.
With regard to swtiching, I think I'll probably give Emailchemy a try
and move to Thunderbird. My understanding (looking briefly at the
Thunderbird documentation) is that, like Emailer, a single instance of
Thunderbird can be used with multiple accounts and can use filters much
like E-mailer. That's really all we need at home (that, and working
with AOL for at least the time being). Sooner or later, when I add a
little memory to the iMac (it's got 756 MB now) and upgrade it to 10.5,
I might try the Mail app, but the version that came with 10.3.9 doesn't
cut it. Anyone have any advice in this regard?
Thanks -
Charlie Z
