Another stumping! This is long - but I have included all the steps
toward disaster just in case.

I seemed to have corrected the internet connection speed problem by
resetting the Network System link settings, but I thought I ought to go
ahead and zero the HD anyway to see if I could correct the persistent
volume file errors.

1)I backed up using Super Duper and then zeroed as I slept only to find
this morning that I had mistakenly Erased and Backed Up only the User
Files. Very large groan - but oh well, maybe system needed to be
reinstalled anyway.

2)Using 10.4.3 Install disk, I reinstalled onto the internal HD.

3)Restarted - all looked fine. Downloaded software updates.

4)Restarted into the External HD partition containing my Laptop's files.
Using its copy of Superduper, I copied the Desktop partition's User files
over.

5) Then I tried restarting into the Desktop's internal drive and got
nothing but a GREYISH WHITE SCREEN and a friendly spinning ball. I found
I could restart into the Laptop external partition or the Install CD, so
I corrected permissions and checked the HD - all was well but still
couldn't boot into the internal HD.

6) SO, I have figured out it must have had something to do with my
entering a different "Short Name" (having forgotten the original) when I
did the new Install.

So, I have Erased and Reinstalled again - using the correct Short Name
and the updates are now downloading.

How _should_ I transfer those User files over from the Desktop external -
now that the Short Names match? (I have found that I am often stopped
from dragging by file permission problems.)
