Boot off the install disk, run Disk Utility (in the Utilities menu),
verify the disk. I'm not going to be surprised to find that the disk
already has problems.

After doing a fresh install of OS X, the first thing it does is ask
if you want to move data from another install. That utility can move
all the user data off the external drive to the internal. You can run
that util at any time, Applications -> Utilities -> Migration Assistant
