I originally had a problem installing Appleworks on my G4 Powerbook, as the installer was Classic only. Once I got classic going, I was able to open the installer and afterwords, install the updates needed to get it to work under OSX. Intel Macs would have a problem with these extra needed steps.
I have found that Pages, part of the iWorks combo will open my Appleworks documents. I have not tried some of the various other options of Appleworks like the spreadsheet, and other variants available thru Appleworks. I have not tried to open stuff from my old ClarisWorks Version 3 days, but I would imagine those would also open as well, and could test them out if you have some really old documents you need to try to open.
