Well (imo - not always the best opinion) one way to do it is like this: make the g-code you switch modal, add them to the active g-codes list, then patch the GUI to read that and show an appropriate message. The later part can be something someone else might help with, doing the first part should be enough of a learning experience for you ;) Btw, it would be really nice if you would step by #emc-devel at irc.freenode.net, you'll get much faster feedback that way.
