I think the size of the current docs DOES need several separate files, as PDFs. I don't think "many" is required, and maybe the current breakup into about 4-5 is about right.
And, I think there are real benefits to both HTML and PDF. The PDF gives better graphics and text, plus typeset formulas. The HTML gives very fast access to one specific chapter, maybe 5 - 10 times faster than loading a PDF. If the screen presentation is a bit less attractive, that doesn't bother me.
