Yes.  Especially if the drive requires a setup time before or after a 
direction change,
you can get one (micro) step in the wrong direction every time the 
direction signal
changes state.  There are settings in the HAL file for this.

Generally if you ask for too much speed or acceleration you will get 
horrible grinding
noises and obvious stalls, but improper step/dir timing can cause very 
subtle errors
that accumulate.

To eliminate backlash, do all moves in the same direction.  To correct 
scaling errors,
make long moves.
