Just a note in support of this proposal and perhaps taking it further.

Michael H put me onto redis when I was trying to determine the best
method of making hal pin values visable to external userspace programs.
I used the C libraries and found them straightforward and redis works well.

The scenario was a development cycle for a realtime component, that
necessitated opening and closing emc repeatedly.
I was getting sick of opening a new Hal Configuration window each
restart and manually selecting the required pins to view them.

redis enabled me to display the values in a separate userspace GUI,
redis being supplied data by an emc userspace component attached to the
required signals.

The prospect of having the contents of emc.var, perhaps tool.tbl and
more available to view and edit via a key database server would open up
a lot of opportunities for interface with external programs and may be
reduce some of the clutter of files.

Just my six pence worth

regards
