There is also a scratch-written version of the same thing in the
lcd.comp component, to format floating-point values for LCD displays.
it probably breaks a lot more easily than the real thing.

It would be rather nice if HAL modules could send output to the halcmd
terminal. That would save the unpleasantness evident in man setsserial
where the instructions are to open two terminals, and tail -f
/var/log/kern.log to see what is going on.
