I don't know squat about the commands and parameters which are being discussed---I'm trying to learn them from this discussion---but from my experience in technical committees, I have to reiterate Andy's desire to focus. Too often, I saw folks "jump on a horse and ride off in all directions" as my Grandmother used to say. Out of ignorance, I ask - what existing G-code? Are we talking about legacy G-code for specific parts or MOPs (machine operations) on hand in a machine shop that has now added a LinuxCNC machine to the mix? G-code as it would be emitted from specific postprocessors on specific CAM systems? What's the scope of the problem? The notion of compatibility-switches is intriguing; I missed it if it has already been discussed. The primary use case as I see it is of a LinuxCNC shop taking on a job where G-code files have been delivered from elsewhere and in <name your favorite vendor>-specific format. Am I correct that the choices would be either to remap the code or to use a compatibility-switch to affect the behavior of the LinuxCNC interpreter? As an aside, I assume most G-code files are not well documented internally as to source of the code and intended target of the code. Are there any 'file'-like programs out there that parse a G-code file and make guesses as to its flavor? Inquiring minds want to know.
