I understand... I run into that type of thing once in a while also.
I'd consider trying to upsell them into putting a servo where the 
existing motor is now.   It will pay for itself in no time
if they use the machine a lot.   If they have a C face motor driving the 
gearbox that might be difficult, but if the gearbox is divorced from
the motor it might be feasible mechanically.  Something to consider.
