I second that this is a reasonable first step, and wish you good luck with it! 
I'll certainly help if I can.

I think whether my proposal is orthogonal to your effort or not will depend on 
what kind of computation, data structures and lower-to-upper layer interaction 
you wind up with. I hope a scaled down approach is feasible within the current 
scheme.
