You might want to check with Memleak in IRC since he's been building our Gentoo systems for x86 and ARM. He's mostly working on porting RTAI to ARM now. I'll check on where he has the Gentoo build instructions for Linuxcnc and also RT kernels for either architecture.
Gentoo RTAI x86 latency is ~4uS on most AMD hardware made in the last 4 years and preempt_rt is ~40uS.
