This ties in with something that I have been thinking of for quite a
while, that it would sometimes be handy to be able to apply an
external offset to an axis.
(You can sort-of do this with the offset component, but that doesn't
necessarily obey axis limits of length, velocity and accel)

If you don't need it to be bidirectional then you would just wire both
inputs to the same source.
