I recently put together a stepper control box and used XLR connectors and made up 5 cable sets for the motors and they worked very well.
There are some high quality XLR sockets and plugs available for very reasonable prices. Much nicer than the round connectors oftentimes used on Chinese machines. Look for Pro Audio supply houses.
