Have done some work with gEDA gschem or later renamed to lepton schematic. Basic idea is an extra netlist backend to generate the hal file from the schematic, also need to make a library with symbols of course.

If doing changes to the .hal files it might be worth looking at structural VHDL and reuse the syntax.
