This is probably true, and the nature of open source means that you can see behind the curtain and notice this. Whether commercial controllers are different is hard to say. There is no lead developer with a grand vision, who allocates tasks to a fleet of willing minions.So, yes, individual developers work on the parts that matter to them. > will likely always remain hobby driven.
