different. (the .so file become .ko with RTAI)

Actually it's even more complicated than this.

lunuxcnc-uspace can run with an RTAI or Xenomai kernel, using LXRT.[1]

So there are potentially 4 different combinations of linuxCNC and kernel
that will work.

[1] I have not figured out how to create the linuxcnc-rtai and
linuxcnc-xenomai helper packages since 2.8, though. I think it was some
makefile-magic that Jeff may have pulled out when he unilaterally
unsupported RTAI
