heh - I was surprised to see the login screen. I had not even looked at the
computer from starting the install until I saw the login screen. The
password turned out to be 'live'.

This is on an older Dell Optiplex XE. Circa 2010
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU     E8400  @ 3.00GHz
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU     E8400  @ 3.00GHz

8gb ram

250gb hard drive

Tried your suggestion
   In a terminal I changed the sources.list
   ran sudo apt update
   opened synaptic
   clicked reload
found no files to update - probably not unusual here with no repositories
specified

The two sections of feedback were not a problem for me. I just thought no
user interface during the software interface was unusual.
