Hello from San Diego:

Paul Herrick asks about the use of magnesium in ITE equipment.

There are no requirements in IEC 950 or equivalent standards
regarding the use of magnesium.

I would suggest applying the IEC 950 tests of either A1 or A2
to the magnesium part. If it passes, it is equally as good
as an acceptable plastic part. (I would expect it to easily
pass.)

In doing the test, you should take appropriate precautions to
be prepared for the worst-case, namely igniting the magnesium.

On the other hand, if you can show that the magnesium is used
outside of the required equipment fire enclosure, then no tests
are necessary.

Best regards,
Rich
