I recall one of my original TUV engineers was from Germany (a long time ago) and we discussed reed switches. They did not like them, especially for interlocks, because of the 8 mm creepage/clearance issue. Generally reed switches had trouble meeting that requirement. The other issue was no mechanism to force open welded contacts. But that was all a real long time ago (12 years I think). Things may have changed since then.
