Lisa,

Personally, I would like the term "CE approved" be stricken from all spoken
and
written language. But unfortunately, the term has so pervaded the lingo of
today, I suppose it has to be true, eh? CE self declaration should include a
signed declaration of conformity with supporting test documentation to back it
up, and the CE marking on the product. These pieces should all fit together
into a nice neat legally defensible package. I'm stumbling off this rickety
old
 soapbox now.

Anyway, CSA's Certification program is quite formal and not unlike UL's
Listing
program. It involves contract signing, product evaluations, regular production
inspections, etc., etc. On the other hand and with few exceptions, the CE self
declaration scheme according to the LVD puts the onus completely on the
manufacturer's shoulders. Also, if this product has a CB certificate and test
report, then CSA might waive a portion or all of the testing, but I don't
believe that CSA would accept any self-declared test data. After all, they
presume some responsibility for letting you put their mark on your product.
With that partnered responsibility they must be confident that the product is
safe enough for their mark to be affixed to your product and the only way for
that to happen is to have them evaluate the product.

Even with all this said, please discuss this with the CSA office nearest you.
It will likely be the office you'll have to deal with anyway in obtaining
their
 certification of your product.

I hope you can now see the difference between the CE marking scheme and the
 formal CSA Certification program.

Anyone, please correct me if I have erred. Anyone from CSA like to expand on
 this?

 Best regards and Happy Holidays,
 Ron Pickard

Maybe someone can clarify this for me. I have a product which is currently
CE approved including LVD to 61010 that I also wish to have CSA approved
for use in Canada. I know at one time there were conflicting requirements
but now I believe that CSA uses 61010 as well. What is involved in getting
both approvals? Does it require a retest by CSA to verify 61010 compliance
or will they accept the report done for the CE mark? Any help would be
appreciated.

     Happy Holidays!

               Lisa
