Brian,

Paragraph 15.8 of the EC Guidelines for the EMC Directive (complete text
inc. all Appendices at www.tapc.org.uk), discusses the "Marine Equipment
Directive" (96/98/EC) as being in transition from 6/30/98 to 12/31/98 and
being mandatory after 1/01/98. If 96/98/EC is applicable to the products
you are concerned with, it takes precedence over the EMC Directive. For
equipment not covered under 96/98/EC, the EMC Directive is mandatory from
1/01/98.

You need to obtain and review 98/96/EC. I searched the EUR LEX website,
but have not been able to obtain a copy of 98/96/EC. If anyone knows of
sources for Directives and compliance information, please pass it on to the
group.

You may also want to review the "Recreational Craft Directive" 94/25/EC for
possible applicability.

Happy Holidays to all!

Subject: CE Requirements for Marine equipment

A company I'm representing manufacturers Engine Panels and Pilot House
Controls
for boats, yachts, and tankers. Most of the components in these assemblies
are
gauges and mechanical controls, but some incorporate electronic gauges and
controls. On a recent contract with a European boat manufacturer, we have
been
asked to verify these type of assemblies to meet the European requirements
for
application of the CE marking.

Is there a new approach directive that this type of product would fall
under?
If so, what standards would apply?

If not, what tests and levels would some of you experienced people
recommend we
test this product to keeping in mind the environment in which it will
operate?

Thank you in advance.
Happy holiday.
