A piece of hardware that will make it easier to implement Ted Eckert's
suggestions is:

DigiKey catalog number J462-ND
VERTICAL SHIELDED JACK - TIN
Johnson Components P/N 129-0701-201
$3.69 each, qty. 1 to 9

These are PCB mount shielded test jacks that will accept many models of
oscilloscope probes. I have used them many times for diagnostic work. They
fit TPI, as well as many H-P and Tektronix probes.
