May I take this opportunity to thank everyone who responded to my 
question regarding manufacturers' instructions not to use 
rechargeable batteries: your replies have quenched my curiosity 
and provided interesting reading for my colleagues here, too.

I certainly appreciate the risks of batteries discharging into a short 
circuit, having in the past removed an apparently dead (non-
rechargeable!) 9V battery from an electronic clip-on ammeter and 
dropped the battery in my pocket with my keys.  The subsequent 
extreme discomfort in the groin area illustrated to me then that 
even dead batteries can still generate quite a bit of heat energy.
