Joe, We have evolved to the following type of documentation for home and/or office laser/inkjet printers:
- Hard and/or soft copy "Setup Guide" - Soft copy "User's Guide" - Hard and/or soft copy "Service Manual" We (Product Safety) have insisted that our standard "safety information" statements MUST be provided in hard copy, even if they are repeated in soft copies. Several of these are most relevant at the time of installation, therefore, they are typically placed in a hard copy "Setup Guide" near the front of the Guide. Setup is when the lifting, installation of options, cabling, plugging etc. occur, and seems the best placement for related safety statements. The EMC and Laser "notices" are typically placed in the soft copy "User's Guide", as these are more relevant over the life of the installation. In addition, these notices are seldom read or understood by typical ITE end users. All soft copy documents are readable using Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is free to users, and becoming a standard way to view pdf files. Adobe makes its money on the "front" end by selling the licensed document creation software. An advantage of soft documents provided at purchase via CDs, is that future revisions can be posted on the web for user download. There is no reasonable way to distribute revised hard copies, as this would require mailing to a large, and unknown, number of owners. This is not "the" solution, but merely "a" solution. There are probably many solutions, driven by global and country standards, documentation costs, rapidly emerging internet technologies, etc. Regards, George Alspaugh Product Safety Lexmark International Inc. Lexington, KY ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// We are planning to switch over to an on-line system for our User Manuals. Does anyone have any experience with using an on-line system? Does the user have the same access as with paper manuals? What are the downsides of such a system? Has anyone dealt with UL and the European Union on their acceptance of on-line manuals? All information is appreciated.
