Peter

Can't spare much time to this but here is some info.

The applicable directive is 95/54/EC (OJ Vol 38 L266, 8 November 1995) -
and can be found at

http://europa.eu.int/eur-lex/en/lif/dat/1995/en_395L0054.html

This directive is specifically automotive EMC - and talks about ESA's and
STU' as defined in C2.1.10. 'Electrical/electronic sub-assembly' (ESA)
means an electrical and/or electronic device or set(s) of devices intended
to be part of a vehicle, together with any associated electrical
connections and wiring, which performs one or more specialized functions.
An ESA may be approved at the request of a manufacturer as either a
'component' or a 'separate technical unit (STU)' (see Directive 70/156/EEC,
Article 2).

The technically very similar 2 & 3 wheel vehicle directive (97/24/EC - OJ
Vol 40, L226, 18 August 1997) is

http://eur-lex/en/lif/dat/1997/en_397L0024.html

The latter covers all aspects of the vehicle and the emc stuff is at the
back.

In both of the above URL's you will have to get paper copies to get all the
annexes and the related diagrams - which are not given in the soft copies.

Both are totally different to the EMC Directive, being "old approach"
directives with the technical requirements (which are also a totally
different set from the EMC Directive EN standards) written directly into
the directives, and requirement for 3rd party certification (not called
competent body) in both cases

A lot of useful information can be found on the UK Vehicle Certification
Agency (VCA) site:

Subject: Automotive EMC Directive

Dear All,

Does anyone know:

1) when the automotive emc directive comes into force?

2) what are the applicable standards?

3) what does a manufacturer do now, during the transition period?

4) Doers manufacturer have to go through a competent body?

5) Who are the competent bodies currently testing to the automotive emc and
especially on a Global Positioning Device used in vehicles.

Thanks and Best Regards
