Where does the term "thieving" come from?

Not having a board-fab background, I guess at it. But it was explained to
me that thieving uses etchant that otherwise would work elsewhere on a
board. One could say thieving steals etchant from other places. I am fully
prepared to be shown wrong, probably as soon as I get over to the Web and
look it up! I would not be surprised to find it was Norman French, from an
ancient term used by the guild of engravers.

Do you know the origin of the term "thieving" for copper thieving? I am
curious, and just a little dense this morning; thieving implies stealing?

Who or what is stealing what? Is something stealing copper or is copper
stealing something else? What do you have in your colorful archives?
