Hi George,
You have two options. UL can actually conduct a Field Evaluation of your
products if they have already been installed in the field (a UL engineer
will go to the site and perform evaluation of the products). If not, you
can actually submit the products for investigation. If these custom lamps
are for one time deal only, you can pursue a Field Evaluation. However, if
you are to manufacture these in the future then, you are better off
submitting the products for UL Listing (UL and C-UL) . Just remember that
Field Evaluation is for one time deal only. The Standards below are used to
evaluate the following:
UL 153 - the Standard for Portable Lamps (CSA 22.2 No.12 for
Canadian Requirements)
UL 1598 - Binational (US and Canada) Standard for Luminaires (hard
wired).
In case you intend to pursue a Field Evaluation, you may want to contact UL
CAMAS (1-360-817-5500, Washington office) since they are closer to you or
UL Santa Clara at 1-800-985-2400.

Hi George & George,
Actually it is not too difficult. The reason is that all of the components
and materials are, or should be, UL Recognized to start with. The first
thing is to buy the standard, UL 1571 or UL 1570. It will be advantageous
to standardize as much of the design as possible.
With the information about components, materials, and design, at hand
contact
UL (or CSA). The closest is probably in Camas WA.
I know this already seems like more trouble than you wanted. However there
is no easier way that I know of.
