There are numerous standards in the market that address surge voltages
associated with the environment and associated test documents.

Some standards are:
IEEE C62.41
IEEE C62.37
IEEE C62.42

Test Documents are:
IEEE C62.45
NEMA LS 1-1992
IEC 61643-1
IEC 61643-12
UL 1449
UL 497

While most of these are related to AC power, the IEEE C62.41 document is the
best at characterizing the surge environment. This document also includes a
summary of the extensive research that has been compiled on this subject.

If there are any questions, please let me know.

Thanks,
Bryan.

Subject: Lightning Surge Characterization/Standards

Greetings folks,

We have products that meet all the Surge requirements
of NEBS GR-1089, FCC-68 and EMC 4-5. But, the same
products are continuously failing in the field due to
real-world lightning strikes.

I have spoken to four other manufacturers who make
similiar interfaces (DSL) and they all have the same
problem : they meet the standards, but fail in the
real world.

I have two questions for the esteemed people here :

1) Were these standards written based on somebody
doing some field evaluations? Has IEEE/Bellcore done
any research into what the waveforms really are for
actual *real-world* lightning strikes? How do they do
that?

2) Is somebody working on re-charaterization of
lightning strikes throughout US (eg, the surges seem
to be more lethal in TN as opposed to CA)? Would you
have the contact details of Working Groups?

Thanks
