All,

There will be a Northeast Product Safety Society meeting next Wednesday,
March 24, at EMC Corporation's Customer Briefing Center in Hopkinton,
MA. A social hour with light refreshments will begin at 7:00 PM and the
technical meeting will start at 7:30 PM. Don Card, Operations Manager
for Intertek Cortland NY, will be presenting this month’s technical
topic concerning the EU ATEX Directive. If you will be in the area,
please feel free to join us as NPSS membership or advanced notice is not
required.

Don Card has been in the working sector for 35 years in various business
sectors including engineering, manufacturing, and for the past eleven
years in product safety certification for Intertek ETL SEMKO. Don is
presently the Operations Manager for the Hazardous Location Products
Group for Intertek ETL SEMKO based in Cortland, N.Y. Don's focus is to
provide manufacturers of equipment for use in potentially explosive
atmospheres with product evaluations and certifications for North
America and Internationally for CE marking of products to the ATEX
Directive and IEC Ex Scheme.

Don’s presentation will provide an overview of the ATEX Directive
94/9/EC which covers electrical and mechanical equipment and protective
systems, which may be used in potentially explosive atmospheres
(flammable gases, vapors or dusts). An ATEX reference booklet and a
poster guide to potentially explosive atmospheres and hazardous
locations will be available as handouts. An outline the ATEX
presentation is:

Scope of Original Specific Directive
Advantages of the ATEX Directive
Approvals under ATEX Directive
Definitions - Area Classification
Equipment Groups and Categories under ATEX
Protection Concepts for Europe
Essential health and Safety Requirements under ATEX

If you or anyone you know would like to give a product safety technical
presentation, please contact Paul Smith, our meeting scheduler, by phone
at (508) 482-7034 or by email at [email protected]. A technical
presentation should be 45 to 60 minutes in duration and be related to
product safety. Although the presentation may reference your company
and it’s services, the presentation must not be simply company
advertising. We would also appreciate any slides or handout materials
be made available for posting on the NPSS web site. Releasing
presentation materials for posting is desired but not a requirement to
make a presentation.
