By the way, the IATA Dangerous Goods regulations for air transportation
applies even to equipment that does not have an active magnet.  For example,
if your product is made of enough steel (which has iron), then your product
could still deviate a magnetic compass by over a half of a degree when
placed seven feet from the compass.  Every 19-inch rack that I have tested
even empty have met this criteria and have had to be air shipped as magnetic
material under the IATA Dangerous Goods regulations.  An individual watch
would have too little steel to significantly deviate a magnetic compass, but
it is conceivable that a container filled with watches might have to be
shipped as magnetic material since the IATA dangerous goods regulations are
based on per line item shipped (pallet, crate, container).

        Drew - 
        32kHz is the frequency of the clock in all common wristwatches.
        The length of an antenna necessary to be an effective radiator at
that frequency is quite long, far longer than anything you will have.

        All PCs and laptops have similar circuits in them, without any
airline complaints, either.

        I have a copy as well and was not able to find anything.  The main
concern here is for regulation of electromagnetic interference on the
aircraft.  We typically manufacture radios and are required to air ship
battery powered devices that are transmitting.  However, these devices are
in a "sleep" mode with only a 32kHz clock operating.

        From my experience, finding out if something is legal is a lot more
difficult than finding out if something is illegal because there may not be
anything written about it.  This may be one of those situations but I would
like to know that I have looked in all of the right places.

Drew,

In looking through my copy of the IATA "Dangerous Goods Regulations" I did
not find anything on this type of device.  But, depending on the type of
battery there may be some things to look for.  Outside of that the only
other thing I know of is for magnetic devices.  For example one of our parts
has very strong magnets in it so in order to ship by air there is special
labeling requirements for the package to ensure that it is stored in an area
that will not affect magnetic navigational equipment.
