American Wire Gage (AWG) was originally called the Brown & Sharp Gage (B&S).
It is defined by:
* A solid, round AWG 4/0 (AWG 0000) wire is 0.4600 inch diameter.
* A solid, round AWG 36 wire is 0.005 inch diameter.
* Wire diameters follow a geometric progression.
Thus solid wire diameter is approximately 0.32486 * 0.89053^AWG inches or
0.0082515 * 0.89053^AWG meters.
The diameter of standed wire depends on whether it is:
* Concentric-Lay, and the number of strands (7-strand is nominally
1.134 times, 19-strand is nominally 1.147 times, and 37-strand is
nominally 1.151 times the diameter of the same AWG solid wire)
* Equilay.
* Bunched.
* Rope/Bunched.
* Rope/Concentric.
* Smooth-Bunched.
For these other constructions you either need to measure a sample, or look
in manufacturers' catalogs.
This information comes from Appendix H, Wire Gages, of Robust Electronic
Design Reference Book, Volume 2 (Kluwer Academic Publishers: Boston, MA,
2004), which discusses 28 common wire gages encountered worldwide.
Similarly, Appendix I, Sheet Metal Gages, discusses 13 common sheet metal
gages encountered worldwide. By the way, Chapter 17 of the books, Transient

concerning wires use either AWG or cross-sectional area (CSA).
