Table 13.2.2 (pg. 79-32) of NFPA 79 gives the cross sectional area of
conductors from 22 AWG through 1000 kcmil.  More detailed tables per wire
types are also located in Chapter 9 of the 2002 NEC (Tables 5, 5A & 8 - pgs
70-622 - 70-625).

Even though there is isn't a exact conversion, Table 3B of IEC 60950-1 gives a
commonly used cross reference between AWG and mm2

>From memory, I think you will find a wire size conversion table in the NFPA
standard for machine tools (NFPA 79) which is roughly the equivalent to IEC/EN
60204-1.

I keep running into conflicting AWG to metric conversion tables, including
some that talk about diameter instead of area, and it raises a couple of
questions:
1. Does anyone know of an OFFICIAL source that identifies the current-carrying
cross-sectional area for each size in the AWG system?  I'm not looking for
correlation to standard metric sizes (I know there isn't a 1:1 correlation)
just the official area of the standard AWG sizes.
2. Since stranding type affects the outer diameter of the copper (excluding
insulation), I've always avoided using metric diameter in favour of metric
area (square mm), and I've always assumed that the official measure (e.g. in
metric electrical codes around the world) uses square mm as well.  Is that
assumption right or are there codes that use diameter?
