Table 13.2.2 (pg. 79-32) of NFPA 79 gives the cross sectional area of conductors from 22 AWG through 1000 kcmil. More detailed tables per wire types are also located in Chapter 9 of the 2002 NEC (Tables 5, 5A & 8 - pgs 70-622 - 70-625). Does anyone know of an OFFICIAL source that identifies the current-carrying cross-sectional area for each size in the AWG system? I'm not looking for correlation to standard metric sizes (I know there isn't a 1:1 correlation) just the official area of the standard AWG sizes. 2. Since stranding type affects the outer diameter of the copper (excluding insulation), I've always avoided using metric diameter in favour of metric area (square mm), and I've always assumed that the official measure (e.g. in metric electrical codes around the world) uses square mm as well.
